With remote work settling into a long-term arrangement for so many of us, this is the perfect moment to rethink how a temporary desk setup can become a more considered, comfortable environment. When you can't spare a full room for a dedicated study, staying productive at home can feel like a puzzle—and design houseHerman Millerhas set out to make it easier.
Though its iconic ergonomic seating may sit outside many budgets, the brand's research team has spent years studying how the ideal workstation comes together—and they've distilled those insights into abrief assessmentthat pinpoints what's holding your setup back and how to address it. "Our goal was to highlight how many small, no-cost adjustments anyone can make to feel better and work more comfortably throughout the day," notes Ben Groom, the company's chief digital officer.
You may decide to invest in that statement chair or upgrade to a larger display down the line, but plenty of meaningful adjustments can happen today. Below are a few of the most useful lessons we took away from the brand's workspace assessment.
Even if you're working with whatever corner happens to be available, the assessment emphasizes how even a littlenatural lightcan lift your mood and sharpen your focus. Take a cue from a napping cat and follow the sun throughout the day.
An ergonomic chair and a real desk would do wonders for your posture over a long to-do list, but a dedicated setup isn't realistic for everyone. You can still meaningfully improve your comfort by lining up the top third of your screen with your eyes—try propping your laptop on a small stack of books to reach the right height.
If your chair allows for height adjustment, raise or lower it until your feet rest flat on the floor—that simple change supports better posture and keeps you comfortable for longer stretches. If not, a small stool or sturdy box under your feet works wonders, and your back and shoulders will feel the difference.
