At this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan, IKEA had two major announcements: first, it’s reviving a pair of iconic furniture pieces from its archives. Second, the Swedish giant unveiled a brand-new collection called Brӓnnboll, technically geared toward gamers—but one standout piece has us eyeing it for all sorts of alternate uses.
Brännboll Gaming Station, IKEA ($400)
The collection’s gaming station cabinet is technically designed to house a wide monitor (it accommodates one up to 27 inches, with room for a PC tower too), but it’s equally suited as a desk for anyone working from home. “We’d seen DIY versions of this, where people would game inside closets,” says Philip Dilé, a product design developer at IKEA. “But there was always a chair standing awkwardly to the side.” So they solved that: The cabinet doors open and close smoothly, and the desktop folds up so your chair tucks inside too. If you’re a messy-desk type, rejoice—you can hide the chaos the moment the workday ends.
And there’s still more to like—chiefly the felt panels, which soak up sound during video calls and podcast recordings (genius). You can also use them to pin important papers or, in true high-school-locker fashion, snapshots of your favorite people.
Closed up, the cabinet spans just 40 inches wide and stands about 80 inches tall (depth is roughly 29 inches). That makes it a compact way to work from home without anyone being the wiser. IKEA first announced the Brӓnnboll gaming station back in April, but it only landed on shelves this week—so we mean it when we say we waited all summer for this one.
