When my boyfriend, Paul, and I moved into a Brooklyn brownstone last year, we agreed the second bedroom would be his art studio. But one major paint spill later, he joined a professional studio a few blocks away and moved all his supplies there, so I inherited the room as my home office. (We still affectionately call it the Studio, though.) The two things he left behind? The sets of metal pegboards he’d mounted on the walls for his art supplies. And thank goodness—they’re a godsend for storage and, as it happens, for showing off our distinct personal styles.
At $50 on Amazon, the easy-to-install Wall Control Metal Pegboard makes you feel like you live in a cool industrial loft, and it holds just about anything. The board comes in 10 colors and two pieces, so you can configure it however you like (Paul’s is spaced apart; mine is together), and the hundreds of accessories mean storage options are essentially endless. From shelves to tiny bins to hooks of every size, there’s nothing we can’t organize on the boards—even…a handsaw? (Explain yourself, Paul!)
But they’re not just utilitarian workhorses—you can adapt them to fit any style. Paul’s orange boards, for instance, store our household tools while doubling as a display for his beloved 2020 World Series Champion (he made me add that) L.A. Dodgers memorabilia. On the other side of the room, my white pegboards serve as part bookshelf, part mood board above my matching white powder-coated steel desk. Even though our pegboards are different colors and stuffed with a mishmash of items, we’ve found that pops of yellow through art and furniture tie the room together.
As our lives shift, so will the pegboards. But if we ever move, those boards are coming with us. After all, where else would we store that handsaw?
